FAQ

What are Habit Hand Tied Extensions?

“Habit” refers to the method I use. I was taught by Chrissy Rassmussen (check out @hairby_chrissy on Instagram!) and her amazing staff at Habit Salon in Gilbert, Arizona. “Hand Tied” refers to the type of extension hair used. Hand tied wefts have many benefits - you can stack them, stagger them, and you have way more customizable color options! They can be sewn down tight and are flush to your head, making them easier to hide in the hair.

How much do they cost?

This answer varies greatly and depends on your starting point and your end goal! Please follow the instructions under the “new client” tap!

How do they work?

The hand tied extension hair will be sewn down to a “row” which is made out of your hair, beads and thread. The number of rows and amount of hair used is customized for each guest’s goals.

Will they damage my hair?

No extension method should cause damage to natural hair if it is installed and cared for properly. That being said, the Habit method doesn’t use any heat, glue, bonds, or chemicals! I use silicone coated beads and strong thread to keep your extensions secure. The Habit method offers fewer contact points on the head making these comfortable and safe for any hair type.

Are the comfortable?

Most people find them very comfortable, especially if you’ve had extensions before. If you’re a first timer you can expect slight tension for a few days and some people experience slight itchiness. It feels like a tight pony tail! These will both subside and your extensions will feel like part of your hair.

What is maintenance like?

Maintenance is due every 6-12 weeks depending on hair growth and comfort level. Your extensions are taken out entirely and redone.

How long can I keep the hair?

With average care your hand tied wefts will last around 6-8 months. With more extreme care they could last up to one year. You can replace a few wefts at a time throughout your maintenance appointments to mitigate the cost of a full installation.

How do I take care of them at home?

  • Brush your hair multiple times per day

  • Use good quality shampoo and conditioner (this is included in your installation appointment)

  • Always use heat protectant when blow drying or heat styling

  • Use dry shampoo and leave in conditioner at night

  • Secure hair while you sleep (braids, twists, bun etc.)

  • Do NOT swim in a pool or the ocean without taking these precautions:

    • Before swimming you must wet your hair and apply your favorite treatment (olaplex, deep conditioner etc.) and secure your hair into a top knot or pony tail. After leaving the pool/ocean shampoo and conditioner your hair as soon as possible.

  • Don’t play with your beads. If something is uncomfortable or sticking out please inform me at your maintenance appointment so we can adjust your placement.

  • Keep heat styling to a minimum if possible. Hand tied hair holds its style well so next day touch-ups are a breeze!
